It’s been a few weeks since Apple sent me my “final” replacement unibody. I ended up with the 9C85 screen, which has a yellow tint, almost vomit stained look to it. Everytime I open the lid I hear an annoying clicking noise and if my palms are rested on the machine it teeters back and forth, similar to a soothing rocking-chair.

If I wanted my laptop to rock back and forth, diplay vomit and occasionally power itself off due to some unknown video card issue that “has not been document by Apple technicians”, I would have bought a $600 HP or Dell.

I’m not a mean person, and under no circumstnaces would I ever wish harm to another living being, but karma definitley has it’s way of coming around. Better watch out Steve, Apple execs and anyone else who has insuated that I am some type of ignorant consumer that shouldn’t know any better. It’s coming around in 2009!

If anyone else is experiencing problems with their Macbook Pro Unibody and is getting the run-around from Apple zombies. Please post some comments, send me an email, share your experience.

Also, it would be great to start accumulating some information regarding which systems are defective. Visit this site and enter your serial number. It will display information about when your system was made, which factory and how many were on the production line.

It’s been 3 months since Apple sent me my Unibody Macbook Pro. Being the hardcore user that I am, I opted for the best of the best and upgraded the HD to 320Gb 7200rpm along with the 2.8Ghz processor. I’m going on replacement #5.

Replacement 1: Dented body, faulty batter indicator

I received my first macbook pro (5th gen/unibody) early October. When I opened the box I immediatley noticed that above the trackpad there was a huge dent. This was obviously unacceptable, so I called Apple and requested a replacement. Another issue that was discovered shortly after was that the battery indicator on the left side of the machine was not functioning.

Replacement 2: Defective video card, broken clutch/monitor hinge

I received my second replacement. Actually that is a lie, Apple shipped it to the wrong address and I had to drive 40 minutes away to pick it up at the FedEx depot. When I finally got home and pulled it out of the box I noticed that as I opened the lid/screen it made a horrible cracking noise. I didn’t think much of it, being a new system, perhaps it was just nice a stiff. After working for a few hours, things seemed great. I shutdown and closed the lid. As I lifted the macbook pro to place it in my bag, I noticed that the black clutch at the back had popped right off. I immediatley popped in back into place and opened up the lid. After gliding my finger across the inside of the bezel I noticed that the entire thing was warped!

I used this machine for 4 days. On the 4th day, I was working with some graphic software and as it was rendering, the system decided to shut down the program, clear my desktop of it background and contents and in the top left corner appeared a lovely black box. This was fixed by a restart. I decided to try and recreate the occurance, so I loaded up a graphic intensive game, played for about 20 minutes and bang! The computer just shut itslef off.

I called Apple and requested yet another replacement.

Replacement 3: Yellow screen (9C85), squeaky keys

This one is the best yet. I open the 3rd replacement macbook pro, I place it next to the 2nd replacement, in order to transfer my files via fw800 and I immediately notice that the screen on the new machine is YELLOW compared to the crisp white screen of the previous one. My first reaction was that the screen must be defective. After some research I discover that Apple actually manufactures to different screens for their unibody Macbook Pros.

9C84 – Manufactured by LG/Samsung
9C85 – Manufactured by Chei Mei

Turns out I received the No Frills brand monitor. Normally, this wouldn’t bother me, but considering that the difference between the two screens is very apparent, I was appalled that Apple would try to put lower quality screens in their Pro line machines.

Another issue with this machine, aside from its sub-par screen, was that my keys were squeaky! I have a video of these squeaky keys in a previous post. Feel free to look it up.

I called Apple and demanded to receive a new machine, however, I wanted them to ship it to the closest Apple Store so that I could open it up with the store manager present, just in case there was a defect.

Replacement 4: 9C85 Chei Mei Screen

The Apple Store Yorkdale called me to pick up my in-store replacement. The system was in great condition, however, the screen was not the brilliant wide screen I purchase, it was infact, the Chei Mei yellow tinted junk screen. I placed the replacement down next to one of the store models and put the brightness on both machines all the way up, as well as changed both color profiles to default. I asked the store reps to bend down to look at the screens side by side and it was a unanimous “Oh!”. They all noticed the yellow screen.

Long story short, they kept the 4th replacement and told me they’d look into this two manufacturer discovery as they had never heard of it.

I am currently awaiting my 5th and final replacement. Apple will not acknowledge the difference between these two screens and would rather insult the intelligence of their most loyal customers by offering us some useless goodwill gestures, like an ipod touch.

You know what Apple? I bought an iPhone 3G, I bought a Macbook Pro fully loaded, I bought a Dual G4 when they first came out in 1994, I bought a Dual G5 shortly thereafter, I own Logic Audio, Final Cut HD and 3 ipod nanos.

After this experience, not only am I jaded, but I question your mandate. I thought Apple cared about making us, the professionals – advocates of all that is Apple – happy. It’s apparent now that Apple is no different than Microsoft, Dell or any other big box manufacturer that simply cares about the bottom line.

Maybe my next system will be a Psystar. Steve… you broke my heart.

- For those of you interested in finding out which screen you have…

System Preferences > Display > Color > Open profile >> take a look at line 13. It’s either 9C85(junk) or 9C84(LG/Samsung!)

I just received my 3rd replacement Macbook Pro from Apple. Odd thing is, the screen appears to be completely different. This one seems much more dull and also has a yellow hue. After some digging I noticed that the Build Rev of the new machine is different, as well as the Kernel version and SMC version.

Not only does this Macbook Pro have a yellow tint on the screen, but the machining is off, causing the lid, when closed, to hang noticabley over the left side of the chasis. Also, my keyboard keys squeak like a rusty door hinge!

I was pretty excited when the Late 2008/Unibody Macbook Pro was released – or as it should be refered, the Macbook Pro 5,1. I quickly called up Apple and ordered the 2.8Ghz version with the 320Gb, 7200 rpm drive. As I’ve mentioned in earlier reviews, I love the system overall, however, the quality control implemented by Apple at the Shanghai factory is getting to be ridiculous.

Last month Apple shipped a new MBP to me directly from teh Shanghai factory. When I received it, not only was the shipping box damaged, but there was a huge dent above my trackpad. Obviously, a manufacturing defect. Apple was kind enough to send me a replacement. After about a week I received my replacement only to discover a few days later that my hinge and clutch (the black plastic thing on the back) are defective. The clutch has popped off the system several times and the hinge is warped and makes a horrible clicking noise.

I’m waiting on my second replacement. Well see what happens. Aside from the damaged systems that I’ve recevied, my overall satisfaction with the Unibody Macbook Pro (5,1) is deterriorating. The battery life sucks. The screen gets annoying in less than perfect lighting conditions, not to mention I can’t accuratley calibrate the screen. The parts seem cheap and of low grade and my new gripe… my iPhone can’t be seen when entering DFU mode so jailbreaking has become a pain in the ass.

You know what Apple!? I wouldn’t bother Jailbreaking if a few apps were made available in Canada, such as WinAdmin. I need this app!

Apple recently sent me the 5,1 version of the Macbook Pro, also reffered to as the Unibody Macbook Pro or the Late 2008 Macbook Pro. My previous macbook pro (version 4,1) was purchased back in June 2008 and supposedly has the faulty Nvidia GPU problem.

I’ve had the new MBP, fully loaded, for 3 days and I’ve made a few observations.

Trackpad: The new trackpad is definitley a cool concept. New gestures, huge real estate and a slicker texture make gliding around almost as much fun as skating on a frozen pond. However, push clicks don’t register as effectivley as they did on the previous model trackpads, and the overall sound of the pad seems clunky, high-pitched and downright cheap by comparison.

The Screen: Back lit LED screen. The new screen is really, really sharp and vivid. I am a graphic designer, and let me tell you, the colours on this sucker pop like you wouldn’t beleive. Is it accurate? Probably not. I’ve been having a tough time calibrating it, but it does look spectacular. The gloss doesn’t seem to bother me too much either. I guess, if I had the choice I would probably ask for a Matte screen version, but… Apple doesn’t care. Quick shout out re: the Hinge issue that’s I’ve seen floating arround the Apple support site. Yes, when your’re lying in bed and have the MBP on your knee at a 45, the lid does close. The hinges aren’t bad by any means, theyre just… different.

The Keyboard: Back lit chicklet style. What can be said? If you like it you like it. If not… Apple doesn’t care. I think it’s pretty cool. The keys seems more spaced out to me but I could be seeing things. Other than that, I would go so far as to say that the plastic used on these keys by comparison to my previous MBP are of a much cheaper grade of plastic. Also, getting dust or hair under them is more of a nuissance than before.

Overall Design: Overall, the 4,1 MBP / Late 2008 unibody Macbook Pro, is really sexy looking. It may take some getting used to but I’m sure in time I will love it more than its predescessor.

I ran a few Xbench tests with noth system side by side. I will post the results when I get some time. I can confidently say that the new Macbook Pro beat its predescessor in every single benchmark. No question.

However, the 320Gb 7200 Hitachi in my new MBP lost horribly to the 320Gb Seagate I bought seperatley and installed myself. Hitachi vs Seagate. Seagate FTW.

I am noticing that the track pad is certainly not as responsive to push clicks as my previous MBP. However, I think this is largely to due the fact that the size of the “click-able” area is so enormous. It does seem that, overall, the new MBP is composed of cheaper grade aluminum and plastic components and does have a clunkier click sound than its predecessor.

In all honesty, I think I like my old (4,1) MBP better then the new (5,1) one. Only time will tell I guess.

Back in July I contact both Apple and Nvidia with regards to a faulty GPU article I had read. The article stated that all Nvidia 8600M GPUs were defective as a result of shotty substrates used in the manufacturing process. Both myself and several colleagues have experienced some intermitent issues with our Macbook Pro’s and one of us has actually had 5 Logic Board replacements.

When I spoke to both Apple and Nvidia, they denied any knowledge of a faulty GPU and suggested that the problems being experienced by my colleagues and myself were simply coincidence. Today, October 10th, Apple quietly posted Article: TS2377 which states:

In July 2008, NVIDIA publicly acknowledged a higher than normal failure rate for some of their graphics processors due to a packaging defect. At that same time, NVIDIA assured Apple that Mac computers with these graphics processors were not affected. However, after an Apple-led investigation, Apple has determined that some MacBook Pro computers with the NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT graphics processor may be affected. If the NVIDIA graphics processor in your MacBook Pro has failed, or fails within two years of the original date of purchase, a repair will be done free of charge, even if your MacBook Pro is out of warranty.

Wow! All of the speculation was bang on!? I better be getting a free upgrade on October 14th.

iPhone update 2.0.2 Has destroyed my GPS functionality. 2.0.1 was already fairly inaccurate, however, with the 2.0.2 update my position via GPS does not stay locked for more than 2 minutes. In fact, it has been taking as long as 5 minutes to locate my position, and when it does it is anywhere from 10 to 50 feet off, even showing me as moving quite a distance when I’m sitting perfectly still. My Blackberry Curve GPS and BB Maps was 100 times better than this ridiculous excuse for GPS that Apple has worked into the iPhone 3G.

I would return this device, based on so many issues, but unfortunately my carrier, Rogers Wireless, implements a 30 day or 30 minutes policy, and I exceeded my 30 minutes by about 550 in 10 days =(

Step up your game Apple. First, no response regarding the faulty Nvidia GPU in my Macbook Pro and now shotty software upgrades that are actually making my iPhone worse.

it’s a shame. I went from being a lifetime PC/Windows user and a 3 year Blackberry user to a full blown Mac-head. For what? Nothing but headaches.

It just works… my ass.

I’ve been a PC user since the beginning of time. That being said, this past year, with the release of Windows Vista and the new Macbook Pro with the Intel penryn processors I find myself torn between PC and MAC. In March I purchased a Sony Vaio from a friend of mine at a fantastic price. Now, before you think to yourself, “This guy is pretty lame for buying a Vaio,” believe me when I say, I bought it a a ridiculous discount.

The Vaio has 4Gb DDR2 RAM, 2.2Ghz Intel Duo Core, 2 x 150Gb Hard drives, 17″ high-res monitor and HDMI/Blu-Ray. According to the specs, this system is a MONSTER. However, the reality of the situation is, Vista is a nightmare, SONY packs so much bloatware onto the system that it’s always crashing due to proprietary VAIO software and overall, the performance using Adobe CS3 and gaming is horrible.

My dual core AMD FX-60 running vista blows this thing out of the water in my opinion and that shouldn’t be the case.

I’m fed up and I’ve decided, after some serious deliberation, that I am going to buy a MAC. Why? I hate Apple and everything it stands for! But, despite my deep sense of loathing for the fruit, it seems to be true that even Vista runs better on a MAC.

This leads me to a difficult decision. Do I buy the Macbook Pro 15″ or 17″ ? Do I spend the extra $300 to upgrade from a 2.5Ghz processor to a 2.6Ghz? Or, do I make the smart decision for the money and buy the iMac 24″ with the 3 GHz processor – which is actually a cross in architecture between the Extreme 9100 and a Nehalem, intel’s unreleased chip.

Macbook Pro 17″ w/2.6GHz $ 3681.40

Macbook Pro 17″ w/ 2.5Ghz $ 3418.25

Macbook Pro 15″ w/2.6Ghz $ 3232.93

iMAC 24″ w/3.06GHz $ 2836.30

What do I do!?
