Macbook Pro Late 2008 / Unibody Woes

I was pretty excited when the Late 2008/Unibody Macbook Pro was released – or as it should be refered, the Macbook Pro 5,1. I quickly called up Apple and ordered the 2.8Ghz version with the 320Gb, 7200 rpm drive. As I’ve mentioned in earlier reviews, I love the system overall, however, the quality control implemented by Apple at the Shanghai factory is getting to be ridiculous.

Last month Apple shipped a new MBP to me directly from teh Shanghai factory. When I received it, not only was the shipping box damaged, but there was a huge dent above my trackpad. Obviously, a manufacturing defect. Apple was kind enough to send me a replacement. After about a week I received my replacement only to discover a few days later that my hinge and clutch (the black plastic thing on the back) are defective. The clutch has popped off the system several times and the hinge is warped and makes a horrible clicking noise.

I’m waiting on my second replacement. Well see what happens. Aside from the damaged systems that I’ve recevied, my overall satisfaction with the Unibody Macbook Pro (5,1) is deterriorating. The battery life sucks. The screen gets annoying in less than perfect lighting conditions, not to mention I can’t accuratley calibrate the screen. The parts seem cheap and of low grade and my new gripe… my iPhone can’t be seen when entering DFU mode so jailbreaking has become a pain in the ass.

You know what Apple!? I wouldn’t bother Jailbreaking if a few apps were made available in Canada, such as WinAdmin. I need this app!
